What began as a nasty battle between Ranch Road homeowners and backcountry skiers (as yet unresolved) has become a full-blown master planning effort for the town of Mammoth Lakes.

"It's a novel thing for Mammoth to actually plan something!" Mammoth Mountain Chief Executive Rusty Gregory said to the LA Times.

Meanwhile, second-home owners at various points of access to the Forest have begun to fear the worst—shouting at sled-toting children from their decks, and outfitting old-growth fir trees with store-bought "No Trespassing" signs...
